Smith Emmerson was formed in 1987 when it was then known as TJT Smith & Co.

The founder was Tim Smith who established the practice in 1987 after returning to Nottingham following a five year career in Jersey working with Coopers and Lybrand. Tim grew the practice very quickly forging excellent relationships with banks and other professional contacts which helped to expand the firm.

In 1993, Paul Emmerson joined the practice from Stoy Hayward and quickly developed the same understanding as Tim in terms of business development and building excellent client relationships which again helped to grow the firm and generate more new clients. In 1996, Paul became a partner in the firm which then changed its name to what it is now called, Smith Emmerson.

With the partnership forged, Smith Emmerson went from strength to strength and, in particular, developed specialism in corporate finance, statutory audits and tax consultancy, including Jersey tax. These are specialisms that few smaller accountants possess.

The philosophy of the firm was thus established which is to listen to clients, provide the very best care to them at all times to the best of our ability with appropriate and relevant proactive advice that clients can act on.

In 2003, Tim Smith retired and left the day to day running of the practice to Paul. Tim Smith sadly died in April 2010.

In 2004, Smith Emmerson acquired the practice of Goldsbrough Associates and JB Pashley & Co which helped the practice to double in size by the end of 2006.

In 2007, Smith Emmerson won the 2007-2008 AVN Accountants Firm of the Year award for excelling in the provision of tax planning services. This is an award that was voted on by fellow AVN Accountants.

In 2008, Smith Emmerson merged with a small tax accountancy practice and this helped the practice to expand further into tax consultancy and, in particular, doctors’ tax. Dealing with doctors’ tax affairs has become a specialism of the Practice.

In 2009 Smith Emmerson moved to prestigious offices at its current location on the Nottingham Business Park which has been warmly greeted by both clients and professional contacts.

Today, Smith Emmerson, stands for service excellence and for providing an outstanding personal service to all personal and business clients.
